Back in March we were thinking about our seasonal business that most likely wouldn’t be opening due to Covid-19, and then we started thinking about all the other small businesses that were currently being affected, and we just wanted to do something to help. That’s when the “This Bag” idea popped into our heads: a tote bag project with 100% of profits to help small businesses affected by Covid-19.

A week later, we registered a non-profit organization and created a website (thisbag.ca) and it’s been a crazy whirlwind ever since. Once the stay at home measures were lifted, we were able to source a BC manufacturer for the bags, supporting local small business throughout the process

Since starting our project in May, enough funds have been raised to help 10 small businesses through a micro grant program.

We are so thankful to the community, getting behind the cause and enabling us to help these small businesses in this way. Without their support, we would just have an idea and a garage full of bags.

We were especially touched to see businesses supporting other businesses. Almost half of the raised funds came from businesses buying bags, donating or sponsoring grants. This makes us hopeful about the collective impact we could have standing together and supporting each other. Perhaps we could help 10 more small businesses? 100 more? 1000?

We started the project in Summerland, a small town in BC, and has now reached across the country – and evolved to support other causes that make an impact both locally and globally including: giving clean water, helping the bees, feeding a child and educating a girl.

We started the project with one aim, to support small businesses that make up the framework of our communities. They closed their doors to help keep everyone safe and well, and our mission is to now offer the support they need to adapt or reopen their business in this ever-changing marketplace.
